Young William attended local elementary schools and graduated high school from the Richmond Academy, one of the oldest schools in the country, circa 1783. He then attended and graduated from the Medical Academy of Georgia; where he received his degree in medicine.
On April 23rd 1857, William married Miss Mary Elizabeth Dugas, daughter of Dr. Louis Alexander Dugas and the former Mary Catherine Barnes. Dr. Dugas was a professor at the Medical Academy and would later be Dean of the school from 1861 to 1876. William and Mary Elizabeth had four children. Around 1866, Dr. Holt moved his family to Montgomery, Alabama; where he set-up a large practice.
Dr. William Joseph Holt departed this life on the 28th of April 1881 at the age of 53 years, 3 months and 9 days. Dr. Holt was laid to rest in the his family plot in Oakwood Cemetery along side his two sons, Louis and William, who preceded him to the tomb.
