Bob Alton Herbert Binder
(October 28, 1918 - January 14, 2010)

Bob Alton Herbert Binder; age 91, late of Hillsboro
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 21, 2009, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR.

Bob was born October 28, 1918, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Elmer and Bertha Kohls Binder. While he was still a youth the family followed his sister, Rose, and her young family to Los Angeles, CA. Bob and his niece, BettyRose, grew up as close as brother and sister. He attended Manual Arts High School. A master upholsterer, he learned the family trade from his father. The family had long history of excellence in the craft, including honors in Germany. In January of 1943 he joined the US Army and was honorably discharged in January of 1946. He served in the American Theater as a cook in same detail as Ronald Reagan. They knew each other on a first name basis; Bob would relate how Ron would spot him in the mess hall and call, "Cook me up a steak, Bob!"

In 1958 he moved to Hillsboro to join Rose, and her husband, Herb Uhlmann. He worked for B P John Furniture until retirement. He was a loving great-uncle to BettyRose's children and their families, caring for them as if they were his own. Each year his Easter Eggs had the brightest colors, and he could be counted on for a great round of miniature golf. He enjoyed going to both the Horse and Dog tracks in his 1973 turquoise blue Mustang Grande. Bob cared for his sister in her later years; they were very close. Rose would comment with a wink that she had a Presidential Chef cooking her meals. They both enjoyed the company of their Dachshunds.

Bob was raised a Lutheran; in fact his Sheboygan baptismal certificate is written in German. Our Uncle Bob passed away peacefully January 14, 2010. He is survived by his niece, BettyRose Noble of Hillsboro, and 5 great nieces and their families. Contributions may be made in his memory to Oregon Greyhound Adoption, or to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove.
