Alice Neale Harnett passed from this life for eternal rest with her dear husband January 31, 2009.

Born on Valentines Day 1912, she was one of eight children of Alice Evelyn Newell and Carroll Thomas Neale.

When the younger children reached high school age, the family moved to West Point, VA. Alice and her four older sisters then went to The College of William and Mary. Having never left Virginia Alice married a young Army Officer and began the nomadic life of an Army Wife. She had to endure the WWII and Korean War years when there was little communication with your loved ones in the war zone. Before Interstates, the family crossed the United States nine times by automobile, always with a side trip for sightseeing. They had an interesting tour in Japan in the 50's and three years in Germany in the 60's. Alice realized and appreciated later in life what an adventurous life she had led.

When the Harnetts retired they settled in Summerville, their son-in-law's hometown. Alice finally had her church, her home, prayer group, Bible study and bridge group. She owned and managed an upscale children's shop for many years, The Spice and Snail. Many young friends have commented "I wish Alice was my Mother" and "Alice is my example of how to grow old." Alice was always full of life. Alice was at St. Paul's every time the doors opened. When she lost her license to drive, she moved next door to the church. She attended the children's service at church so she wouldn't have to behave. Alice will always be our Valentine Heart and our "Sweet Little Alice Blue Gown." She is a great loss to her beloved family and will be missed always. Alice dearly loved being Grommom to seven grandchildren and GGMom to ten great grandchildren.

She was the widow of Colonel Robert W. Harnett and is survived by two daughters Evelyn Hutson and husband Heyward and Sarah Dowling and husband Bill; seven grandchildren, Ellyn Hutson-Twitchell, Anne Wannamaker, LTC Heyward Hutson, III, LTC Robert Hutson, Kimberley Porter, Joseph L. Turner, James W. Turner; ten great-grandchildren.
