Sandy Lou (Lou-Lou) was my best friend, no one compared to my Sandy Lou. Sandy is a German Shepherd x Labrador. She looked like a german shepherd but had the build of a lab. She was beautiful. Sandy came into my world in a unusual way. My parents had just rented a little farm cottage and when we went to have a look at the house the last tenants who were moving to New Zealand asked if we wanted the cat and the dog otherwise they were getting put down. There was no way I was having that, so they became my responsiablty. A couple of days later the day after the other people left we moved into the cottage, Sandy wasnt coming out from under the house so I had to crawl under to get her and from that moment it was instant love between us. I had a bedroom attached to the main house and the door opened to the outside and that became Sandy and My room. Sandy even slept on my bed, mind you not much room after me and her. Sandy had had a hard life before hand, I was her 5th owner so she had trust issues but soon enough trust was there between her and me. I got Sandy when she was 4 years old. Sandy would walk me to the school bus then when I was out of sight go straight back under the house and come out and wait for me in the afternoon, mum said she wouldnt even have to look at the clock because she would see Sandy walking to the School Bus Stop. Everyone who knew me knew my Sandy. Every year all my friends and I would get together and have a birthday party with hats, cakes the lot. When I moved to Melbourne to work and study Veterinary Nursing I had to leave Sandy with my parents because I had to rely on public transport and Sandy was just too big to take. I would come home every weekend and the same thing as the school bus would happen, my mum and dad would have to feed her under the house during the week. Sandy would never leave my sight when I was home. After moving back to the country I met Andrew and I had to have Sandys permission first. If Sandy didnt like you I didnt (Sandy liked everyone). The three of us settled in well together. Andrew even had Sandy with him when he proposed to me. Sandy was getting a little old and her back legs were giving in because she had a hip problem which made walking hard but we kept her always comfortable. Sandy was there to welcome Patrick home and we had a happy little family of 4, Sandy even had her own Sofa couch to sleep on. Patrick died in his sleep a month later and I found alot of comfort in Sandy, I clung onto her like nothing else. In June 2000, Sandy woke me up in the night by licking and nudging my hand, I looked at her and just starting crying, I woke Andrew and said look at Sandy, she was wobbling. I carried her outside and knew this was the end, the look in her eyes she knew too. I put her on my bed and in the morning I rang the vet (who I worked for while at high school) and he came around and we put her to sleep. Sandy had had a stroke. I cried and cried and had only ever cried like that when I knew I lost Patrick and the time that followed. My heart had been broken twice in 9 months. Sandy Lou was the most faithful animal friend that a girl could ever want or wish for. It took me a long time to ever a get another dog because the thought of not having Sandy around I couldnt bare and I would always compare any dog to Sandy. I love and Miss Sandy so much, even though she was a dog, she was my best friend, I confided in her and she never judged me, she just loved me for who I was, her Mummy. I know That Patrick and Sandy are in heaven having the best time, they were priveliaged to have known each other.

The photo of Sandy and me was taken when I was 16 in 1994 and Sandy was 6. My mum and I had gone to get glamour photos done and I said to my mum that I wasnt having mine done unless Sandy was in the photo. The photo people had never had a request like it before but they understood. Mum didnt mind she knew what Sandy meant to me.
