EDWARD THOMAS BRANCH was born in Richmond, Virginia, on December 11, 1811. He first arrived in Texas, quite by accident in 1835. He was in route to Cuba, by the brig Montezuma when it was captured by a Mexican vessel. After being robbed of all his belongings, he was put ashore at Anahuac, Texas.

After teaching school in Liberty for a short period of time, he volunteered for service in the Texas Army. Edward was first Sergeant in Captain William M. Logan's Company at the Battle of San Jacinto . Mr. Branch was a member of the House of Representatives from Liberty County in the First and Second Congresses, October 3, 1836 to May 24, 1838. In 1838 he was elected by Congress to the position of Judge of the Fifth Judicial District, which automatically made him a member of the Supreme Court. Judge Branch was elected Judge of the Fifth Judicial District, and moved with his bride,Annie Cleveland to Nacogdoches where for a time they lived at the home of General Thomas J. Rusk. Judge Branch died September 24, 1861 and Mrs. Branch died January 27, 1867. They were both buried in the family cemetery, in Liberty, Texas.

Five children were born to the Branch's, Cornelia, Elizabeth, Wharton, Olive, and Judith.
