Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born Arad in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary, he emigrated to the United States and became an attorney in Indianapolis, Indiana. He entered upon his Civil War service as a Captain in the 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He then served on the staff of Major General Lew Wallace with the rank of Major and as Colonel and commander of the 79th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war."
