Peter L. Johnson married Mrs. Caroline E. Murray on November 11, 1852. Their children are George P., Sarah E. (married Charles Owens), William W., Laura S. (married G. Bowers), Henry Parker, Lenora E. (married J. W. Gomillion), Samuel Pugh.
The Johnsons came to Texas in October 1854. Peter organized the first Sunday School in Woods, Panola County, in 1855 and helped organize the Independence Baptist Church in 1856.
Peter L. Johnson, age 33, enlisted as 2nd Sergeant in Capt. William D. L. F. Craig's Company, Texas Volunteers, on September 16, 1861, at Camp Flournoy, Wood County, for 12 months. His horse was valued at $150; gun, $25; pistol, $10; knife, $2.50. This company subsequently became Company F, 10th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Pvt. Peter L. Johnson was discharged for disability on April 15, 1863.
Peter's brother, George N. Johnson, died at Rockland, a prisoner of war.
Peter taught school and farmed after the Civil War, and also served as county commissioner. By 1900 the widowed Peter L. Johnson, 72, was living with his oldest son, George P. Johnson, 46, and family.
His granddaughter, Mrs. Cora Johnson Burford of Overton, Texas, applied for his military veteran headstone in 1964. The contractor was Bruce Marble and Granite Company, Fort Scott, Kansas.
