US Senator from Rhode Island. Born in Plainfield, Connecticut, he graduated from what is now Brown University in 1799, was admitted to the bar two years later and began practice in New London County. In 1802 he settled in Westerly, Rhode Island, where he pursued both law and banking, and in 1829 was named President of Westerly's Washington Bank. He was a longtime member of the State House of Representatives (1813 to 1830), and a Colonel in the State Militia. A Whig, Dixon was elected to the US Senate and served half of one term, from 1839 until his death. During that time he was Chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims. He was buried in Westerly; there is also a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. His son, Nathan Fellows Dixon II, and grandson, Nathan Fellows Dixon III, would both serve as US Congressmen from Rhode Island.
