Samual was born in Oriental, Juniata Co. His mother died and his father remarried. Sam eventually left home to live with his Grandfather Knouse. After grade school he went on and became certified to teach school. Sam did this for a number of years. For a time he attended a music school in Indiana. This led to his eventually teaching music at singing schools and at church. One of his schools was in the Evendale area, there he became aquainted with Amanda Sellers whom he eventually married. Sam and his wife Amanda were converted at a Mennonite revival and were later baptized. With his musical talents he eventually became the choirister at Lauver's Mennonite Church. He also served as Sunday School Superintendant and a teacher. He gratiously yielded to another choirister who would at times defer to Sam. Sam as a democrat was a supporter of Wm. Jenning Bryan and his bid for the White House. With four children Sam decided to settle down as a farmer. He was a traditional farmer who was very resourceful. He suffered a barn fire from lightningin 1917. His timberland helped rebuild the lost barn. Once while axing a tree along in the woods his axe caught a branch and sprung back cutting Sam in the behind. He severly bled but managed to walk home and got treatment. Upon retirement he moved from the farm to Little Evendale. Sam died of brights disease, kidney failure.
