Elisha had settled in Salt Rock by 1808, was a member of the first Court of Cabell County and was a trustee of both Guyandotte and Barboursville when they were established in 1810 and 1813. He served as sheriff of Cabell County and as a Representative of Cabell County in the Virginia Assembly. Although never called into federal service, Colonel Elisha McComas commanded the 129th Regiment, Virginia Militia of Cabell County during the War of 1812 and was commissioned Brigadier General in 1818 (recorded in minute book 2, page 65, March 25, 1822). There is a bridge named after him in Barboursville. Elisha's family is included in the Cabell County Heritage 1809 - 1996 book, pages 237-238.

The foot of his grave is marked with a flat bronze military marker. He served in the War of 1812.
