"The earliest reference that has been found naming Robert Swain in South Carolina comes from the SC Council Journal, showing he received a bounty of 300 acres between the Catawba and Savannah Rivers [Council Journal, p. 273, 2 Nov 1768]. Robert Swain received a Land Grant from the King of 300 acres in Granville [perhaps this should be Abbeville] County on Mulberry Creek of the Saluda River 28th July 1769. This land lies between the town of Ware Shoals and Greenville Church on the upper road. After the Revolution, he received two grants Aug 1803 on Mulberry Creek in Abbeville County.
On 21 Sep 1797 Robert Swain of Abbeville bought 312 acres from Richard Sadler on branches of Barker's Creek of the Savannah River, paying 25 pounds sterling [Bk. 2N5, p. 159].

In the name of God Amen, I Robert SWAIN of the said District foresaid being as a low state of health but of a sound mind taking into view the uncertainty of time do make and order this to be my last Will & Testament viz. I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the dust from where it was taken to be buried in a decent manner and as to my worldly substance with which God has been pleased to blight me with I make the following distributions. In the first place my will is my family pay all general expency and all my just debts be paid out of my estate.
Item I give unto my son John SWAIN one hundred & ten acres of land being the place or plantation whereon he present lives to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give my daughter Jane NORRIS one bay horse four years old next spring and one young cow to her and her heirs forever.
Item I give unto my daughter Mary SWAIN one negro woman named ______ one negro boy named Allen and one negro boy named Cyrus and my chestnut sorrel horse to her and her heirs forever.
Item I give unto my son Robert SWAIN the plantation whereon I at present live containing about one hundred and seventy five acres or the whole remainder of the whole tract after the 110 acres I already willed to my son John SWAIN is administered of, also one negro boy named Adam - one black horse and one gray horse to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give unto my daughter Elizabeth REEVES a tract of land containing 312 acres lying and being in Pendleton District on a branch of Barkers creek land I purchased from Richard SADLER, one negro boy named George and two cows to her and her heirs forever.
Item my will is excepting the cows already willed away that my stock of cattle, hogs, household furniture and all other goods and chattles not already willed away (except my plantation tools which) I hereby will to my son Robert SWAIN be equally divided between my sons Robert SWAIN and my daughter Mary SWAIN to be for their use and their heirs forever the dividend to be be made by these disinterested persons of the neighborhood to be appointed by the ______ for that purpose.
Item my will and desire is that my present dwelling house with my son Robert SWAIN and the negro girl named Fanney not aforewilled be raised up in the house her services being for the use of the house for the use of my son Robert SWAIN and my daughter Mary SWAIN jointly and my will is that the right of property in said negro girl Fanny be jointly in the right of my son Robert SWAIN and my daughter Mary SWAIN to them and their heirs forever. I do constitute and appoint my beloved sons John SWAIN and Robert SWAIN executors of this my last will and testament declaring this and this alone to be my last will & testament in writing whereas I have herewith set my hand and affixed my seal this the 2nd day of October 1812.
