Michael D. Bates, age 66, a resident of Clinton Township, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 in his home. He was born on September 26, 1942 in Detroit, MI to the late William B. and Rosemary Chouinard Bates. On September 2, 1963 in Treysa, Germany, he was united in marriage to the former Erika Anneliese Schmerer. Together they celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary.
Michael was a graduate of Mount Clemens High School, attended Michigan State University, served in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany when he met his future wife.
After their marriage, they settled in Mount Clemens and Michael began working for General Motors Corporation. His work with General Motors took him all over the globe. As a systems engineer, he installed systems to unify parts in worldwide plants. He retired in 2002. After 2002 he became a consultant for GM China.

In 1969, he joined the Mount Clemens Masonic Lodge F.& A.M. #6 where he served as worshipful master in 1976 and again in 1989. He served on the board of directors for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, was federation chief of the Indian guides at the Mount Clemens YMCA, past president of the Rambling Recs camp group, former member of the Mount Clemens Elks, a 43 year member of American Lutheran Church and 41 year member of his Monday night poker club. Michael enjoyed working in his garden, and traveling. He visited all the continental United Sates and 37 countries. What he loved most was fishing. The last several years he wintered in Texas, spending his time surf fishing with friends.

He is survived by his wife Erika, two children; Karan (Ron) Bates-Gasior and Marc (Sue) Bates both of Mount Clemens, two grandchildren; Drake and Chase Gasior, brother Francis (Ruth) Venticinque of North Carolina, and his constant companion - his Brittany Spaniel, Kira. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother Lena Faye Bates.

Visitation will be held in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main Street, Mt. Clemens on Thursday, October 9, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be addressed to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society, American Cancer Fund or American Lutheran Church.
