Leslie Gordon Sutherland was the son of Donald Gordon Sutherland and Maude Louise Lossing.

Leslie was educated at Corunna Public School and Sarnia Collegiate, He joined the 2nd 11 Royal Canadian Engineers (Reserve), Sarnia and had military training, as a Sapper from August 15, 1940 until May 12, 1941. Leslie enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 15, 1941, in London Ontario. After enlisting, Leslie received training and was posted in various locations, such as Toronto, Trenton, Windsor, the Service Flying School at Aylmer and Halifax. He graduated as a Sergeant Pilot on February 27, 1942. After arriving overseas, Leslie received his O.T.U. in England and became a bomber pilot. He became a member of RCAF #426 Thunderbird squadron “On Wings of Fire." On May 24, 1943, Leslie Sutherland was part of a crew aboard Wellington aircraft HE281 that went missing after successfully bombing Dortmund, Germany. The crashed plane was located at Haaksbergen, Holland.
