Bessie was the daughter of Luther S. Glatfelter and Eliza Jane Hake. Her paternal grandparents were Frederick Gross Hake and Sarah Ann Moore. Her paternal grandparents were Franklin Glatfelter (1824-1915) and Rebecca Margaret Smith (~1825-1893).

Bessie married the Rev. Dr. Charles Norman Shindler. They adopted their niece Marguerite Fogle who became the wife of William Beehner. Charles was born on 24 January 1890 in York County and died in 1954.

In 1920 Bessie, Charles and Marguerite resided at Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, were Charles was the Pastor of the Lutheran Church. In 1930 Bessie, Charles, and Marguerite resided at Johnstown, Cambria County, where Charles was the Pastor.

Reverend Shindler later became the Pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Homer City, Pennsylvania.

The Reverend David N. Finney presided over the funeral service held for Bessie at the Shindler Funeral Home in York, Pennsylvania.
