Restaurateur. Founder of Frisch's Big Boy Restaurants, a franchise chain in five states with over 120 locations. David assumed the operation of his family's restaurant in Norwood, Ohio when his father died in 1923. After selling it to his brothers a decade later, he opened his own restaurant nearby and was soon setback by bankruptcy but overcame the obstacle to become a successful owner of a large franchise. His innovative ideas propelled his success when he established the first drive-in restaurant in southwest Ohio in 1939. In 1946 he introduced the Frisch's Big Boy sandwich to the menu, first served at 45 cents, which was different than other Big Boy sandwiches across the nation because he used tartar sauce instead of thousand island dressing. Frisch already operated restaurants at a few locations by the time he expanded into Kentucky in 1947 and eventually opened restaurants in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The restaurants also offered dining room service and featured a complete menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner including desert selections. Frisch's later added a soup and salad bar and drive-thru service.
