He grew up in Clifton where his mother was a teacher at the "colored elementary school". His father worked for the Southern Railway. Cunningham Bryant attended Howard University. He was an infantry officer in the European Theater during World War II. His honors from the war include a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Afterwards, he was a member of the D. C. National Guard. He was made its commanding general by presidential appoinment in 1971. He was the first federally recognized black general officer in the National Guard. He was promoted to the rank of major general in 1975. He was inducted into the Army Infantry School Hall of Fame in 1981.
