PLANADA, Calif. (AP) - A fourth grader on his way home from school was hit and killed by an oncoming train when noise from another train drowned out warning whistles, authorities said.
Jose Garcia, 10, was playing on the tracks when he was struck Thursday in Planada, near Merced, said Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Lara.
The boy was hitting a stick against a freight train going 10 mph and didn't see the second train coming in the opposite direction at 65 mph.
"It's a tragedy," Planada Elementary Principal Daniel Chavez said. "Because I live in this community, I see these kids all the time. Needless to say, it's difficult."
