1st Lt. William Brewster was held as a POW in the Philippine Islands. In December 1944, he was boarded onto the Oryoku Maru for transport to Japan. The ship was sunk by American planes at Subic Bay, Philippine Islands, on December 15, 1944. He died in the attack on the ship.

William served as a First Lieutenant, 3rd Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Spokane County, Washington prior to the war.

He became a prisoner of the Japanese Army while fighting in the Philippines during the war in 1942.

He was held at Japanese POW Camp 1, Cabanatuan 1-2-3, Nueva Province, Luzon, Philippines 15-121.

William "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army in the sinking of the Oryoku Maru, along with more than 300 other POW's. The ship was sunk by U.S. Navy planes from the U.S.S. Hornet in Takao Harbor during the war. The U.S. Navy was unaware that POW's were on the ship.

He was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.

Sadly, the survivors of this attack were all eventually put on the Japanese ship Enoura Maru which was also attacked by U.S. Navy planes from the U.S.S Hornet on January 9, 1944 and more than 270 American POW's were killed.
