Lula Elizabeth Miller ~~ 88, of Fort Madison, died April 5, 2011 surrounded by family and dear friends. She was born September 17, 1922 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Myrtle (Holman) and Jefferson Goings. Raised on a farm in Missouri, she lived in Illinois before moving to Fort Madison in 1959 to raise her three children. Since 1959 she has been a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Kamal Amer of Meadow Vista, CA; grandchildren Jeffrey Klesner of Chicago, Il.; Trisha Mirel and husband Al of Redwood City, CA; Jason Klesner and wife Wendy of Cabot, Arkansas, and Matthew Beelman of Sacramento, CA. Lula has 7 great grandchildren: Caybron, Jaryn and Keythan in Arkansas; and, in California, Kaan and Kai Mirel and Nicolette and Nicolas Beelman; sisters-in-law and their families, Beulah Goings of Port Charlotte, Florida and Wanda Cornell of Fort Madison. Family members preceding her in death are her father and mother (1969 and 1984 respectively); her son, David Patrick (1963); a daughter, Dianna Kaye Klesner (1977); her husband of 30 years (no children), Richard Miller (2000); and brother, Raymond Goings (2004).

An avid reader, Lula's passions also included flower gardening with a strong interest in orchids and observing birds especially hummingbirds. Lula strongly believed in the work of organizations such as kidney foundation, diabetes association and organ and tissue donor registries to increase education and awareness to health issues and supported Lynn's work in these areas. Loyal, caring and independent are three words that describe Lula Miller. Lula was most thankful and grateful for those who contributed to her prolonged independent life and for their love, friendship, support and fellowship; her family, dear friends Nancy Hays and Gary Stewart, Dr. Artemio Santiago and staff, nurses and medical staff of Fort Madison Community Hospital, neighbors, and friends from the Church. With the flight of a hummingbird and butterfly she is unencumbered and knows the lightness of being.

Family will greet friends from 9:00 am to 10:30 am Saturday April 9, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday April 9, 2011 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. A private burial will be held at the Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel. Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison is in charge of arrangements.
