William Y. Bowls was enlisted on May 1, 1862, for the war. Although he survived several battles, he spent much of the war sick. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 2, Richmond, Virginia, on May 27, 1862, with measles, and transferred to Lynchburg, Virginia, on June 17. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 1, Richmond, Virginia, on April 17, 1864, suffering from erysipelas, and was furloughed for 60 days on May 29, 1864.
