The son of Charles and Mary Lucretia Mitten Steinberg, John graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign and then worked as a chemical engineer for Rayonier, Inc. in Washington state for 43 years.

He married Kathryn Camille Switzer on July 30, 1944 in Piper City, Ford, Illinois. John and Kay led the choir and music program at Shelton United Methodist Church until his death. They had 5 children.

John was the eldest of three children born to Charles and Mary Lucretia (Mitten) Steinberg. His siblings were Richard Mitten and Mary Louise Steinberg. His grandparents were Johann Adam and Louisa Frederika (Koerner/Körner) Steinberg and John Philander and Rachel Emma (Bennett) Mitten. His great grandparents were Johann Heinrich and Anna Martha (Stückrodt) Steinberg, Jakob and Rosina Barbara (Ellinger) Koerner/Körner, William and Rachael T. (Shaw) Mitten and John and Rachel (Shaw) Bennett.
