These dust storms had names such as "Black Blizzards", and often reduced visibility to a few feet. The Dust Bowl affected 100,000,000 acres, and centered on the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, and parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas.

They were called "Okies", and their story is written about in John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath". There is also a two part series about the migration of these people to California on PBS.
My grandparents settled in Merced, where Lin grew up. She married Luther Harvey Brady in 1949. They had three daughters who are still living. Lin became a widow at age 45. She somehow managed to survive for over thirty years without remarrying. During that time she earned a BS degree in Psychology at San Jose State College. Lin died of cancer in Davis California.
