Death: Oct., 1889

Civil War: Company A, 49th Kentucky Infantry (12 mos regiment)

John William Laws was the son of William Laws (1815, KY-1870, MO) and Rebecca Watts (Jan 26, 1814, KY-Feb 1861, Mercer Co., MO). He married (1) Rebecca Hembree (1842, KY-1863?, KY?) in Knox County, Kentucky, on May 24, 1860. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for one year at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, on June 27, 1863. He was mustered into Company A, 49th Kentucky Infantry, on September 19, 1863. John was later promoted to corporal. Corporal Laws was mustered out at Lexington, Kentucky, on December 26, 1864. After the war, John moved to Mercer County, Missouri, to be near his parents and brothers. That is how John knew Mrs. Joshua (Henrietta Barrow) Hopper. Joshua Hopper* was the brother of John's brother-in-law, Creel Hopper, and first cousin of John's sister-in-law, Samantha (Hopper) Laws. Joshua died during the Civil War about 1862-63. After Joshua's death, John married (2) Henrietta about 1866.

* Enlisted as Private, Company A (Capt. Guyman), Mercer County Battalion, Missouri (6 months) Militia, on September 10, 1861. Mustered into service on December 31, 1861. May have died before unit's mustering out on June 30, 1862.
