George Washburn was born in 1927 and was the son of Leslie Ray and Eva Sovie Washburn. George and his family lived in Philadelphia, NY; near the Pine Camp military reservation (now known as Fort Drum).
George was killed when an unexploded shell which was found on the military reservation and brought to the family home as a souvenir months early exploded as he was playing with it.
George was buried in Notre Dame cemetery in Ogdensburg NY. He was survived by his parents, 3 brothers and one sister. A fourth brother was born after his death.
