He served during the Civil War first as Captain of Company G, 9th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, then was Colonel and commander of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services".
