My Mom was born on Thanksgiving Day and lost her mother when she was only 3 years old. Mom, and her older sister and brother were very close all their lives. I know they always felt the loss of their mother, even after their father remarried.

Our Mom and Dad were married June 12, 1948. Our oldest sibling arrived in 1951, with 5 more children coming along over the next 13 years.

Our mother was active in our community, our church and school, and in many clubs and charitable organizations. She never missed us kids' school or sports activities.

I never once saw my Mom take a nap during the day, the whole time we were growing up. I don't know how she did it. She was always busy.

She always told us kids: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." She lived by that, and I never heard her say anything mean about anybody.

Sadly, our Mom died on Mother's Day weekend in 1999. Though we knew she was terminally ill, we didn't expect the end to come when it did. It was a huge shock after she went to sleep Friday night, and didn't wake up that Saturday morning, the day before Mother's Day.

I remember our final hug and kiss when I saw her that last time. She told me she was "going to be alright." That gives me comfort. I know Mom was secure in the knowledge that she would be in Heaven.

That last day, I turned back from her doorway and told her again that I loved her so much. I took a long look at her. She was watching her beloved Chicago Cubs on TV. I never guessed it was to be for the final time. She passed away before I was able to get back in time to see her again. I'm glad I had that last long look at her doing what she enjoyed. I can still see her in my mind's eye, watching the Cubs, and smiling at me, giving me a little final wave.

Mother's Day has never been the same for any of us since.

Mom now has 17 great-grandchildren. She would be so thrilled! She so loved her grandchildren and was so happy when they visited. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

I like to think Mom knows her great grandchildren, and is watching them grow from Heaven. Just as on earth, she watched her children and grandchildren grow.

My mother lives on, forever in my heart.

I love you Mom. Thank you for being my Mom and for always loving me.
