Sedgwick County fire Lt. Bryon Johnson, a 1993 Derby High School graduate and Derby resident, was killed Monday afternoon in an electrocution accident in Haysville.
According to the sheriff's office, a tractor-trailer rig struck a utility pole on Broadway south of Haysville, causing a power line to fall and ignite a grass fire that Johnson and other firefighters responded to.
Johnson came into contact with the power line and was electrocuted.
In a news conference held yesterday, county Fire Chief Gary Curmode paid tribute to Lt. Johnson.
Johnson, 32, a husband and father of two young sons, was on the fast track with his firefighter career.
He had recently obtained his bachelor's degree and was planning to pursue a master's.
In July of last year, he became one of the younger lieutenants to be promoted to that position.
Curmode said that Johnson was one of the best-trained, most safety-conscious firefighters, and his death didn't make sense.
Since joining the Sedgwick County Fire Department in October of 1999, Lt. Johnson had worked at fire stations around the county.
Most recently, he had been based at Station 34, at 71st South and West Street, on the west side of Haysville.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing and are focusing on the accident itself, as well as the fire response.Funeral services for Sedgwick County Fire Department Lt. Bryon Johnson will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Church, 2900 N. Rock Road.
Deputy Fire Chief Rick Brazill said Johnson will be buried with full honors, including having a fire truck serve as his hearse and "last call" sounded in his memory.
He will be buried in Resthaven Cemetery.
Johnson, 32, was electrocuted at about 2:15 p.m. Monday while responding to a grass fire south of Haysville. He is the first Sedgwick County firefighter to die in the line of duty in 17 years.
He came into contact with a live power line that witnesses have said was knocked loose from a utility pole by a semitrailer truck attempting to turn around after driving into a dead end.
