Civil War Union Army Officer. A veteran of the Mexican war, he served during the Civil War in the 95th New York Volunteer Infantry. Commissioned Lieutenant Colonel on December 20, 1861, he was advanced to Colonel and commander only a few months later (March 6, 1862). He was wounded in the right breast during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1, 1863). He briefly commanded his brigade before resigning on October 9, 1863.
