Melvin E. Hudson, 76, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away Wednesday April 6, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital South. Born December 22, 1928 in Garfield, Kentucky, the son of James T. and Rena Pearl (Conover) Hudson. He retired as production operator for Lily Industries. A member of Emmanuel Church of Greenwood. Survivors include one son, Michael Hudson, Greenwood, Indiana; one daughter, Marsha Surgeon, Layton, Utah; one brother, Kenneth P. Hudson, Martinsville, Indiana; three grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday April 11, 2005 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home (formerly known as Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home), 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, Indiana with the Pastor Marion Glover officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
Note: Garfield, Kentucky is in Breckenridge County, but the Kentucky Birth Index shows he was born in Adair County. Mel went to school with my mother and aunt in Adair County and his aunt (his mother's sister) lived "next door" to my grandparents and straight across the road from the school. It is likely that Rena Pearl and James moved to Garfield during some part of his childhood and his family believed he was from there.
When my aunt married Mel, it was his second marriage and her third, both being widowed. They separated before his death. According to my aunt, Mel died at his home in Indianapolis. Apparently he was taken to the hospital and declared dead there. Both his home and the hospital are located in Indianapolis.
Mel came to visit my mother and me often while he was married to my aunt. We both enjoyed his company a lot. He was both intelligent and funny.
Mel was the grandson of John Levi and Mary Susan (Roy) Conover. His grandmother died before 1930. When the federal census was enumerated on April 22, 1930, he was living at the home of his widowed maternal grandfather in the White Oak district of Adair County, Kentucky, along with his mother (listed as Pearl) and brother Edward.
