Edward M Long Jr was my great great grandfather. He was born in Mississippi and grew up near Rocky Springs Mississippi on the Natchez Trace. He fought for the Confederates in the civil war and after the war moved his family to Texas. He was originally in the "Port Gibson Rifles" and transferred to the 4th MS Cavalry where he served under Nathan B Forrest and was paroled in Gainesville Alabama in 1865. He is said to have survived the civil war because he was an excellent horseman who knew the area he was fighting in, and because of the excellent leadership Nathan B Forrest.
He was the son of Edward Morris Long Sr b 1806 and Jane T (maiden name unknown) b 1814. Edward Jr married Mary Ellen Kendrick about 1862. She died Jul 1897 and is buried beside him in Derden Cemetery.
