Died of old age at his farm in Catawissa on 10 July 2011, surrounded by the dogwood trees he had planted and loved.
He dedicated his life to academia and was known for his work on corn genetics. He was a 1934 graduate of Penn State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He earned Master in Philosophy and Doctorate degrees in 1937 and 1938 respectively, in the plant genetics department of the University of Wisconsin. Following completion of his PhD, he did extensive research in Guatemala and later in Switzerland, and taught at a number of universities, including the teaching of plant genetics at the University of Georgia and the Arkansas Polytechnic College and in the mathematics department at North Dakota State University, Fargo.
He enjoyed travel and photography, and in his later years, cultivating the foliage at his Catawissa farm.
