Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. He was a right-handed pitcher who won 237 games in 21 major league seasons with the New York Giants, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and the and Brooklyn Dodgers. He pitched in seven World Series with a won-lost mark of 6-4 and an E.R.A. of 1.83. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969 by the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee. After his playing career ended, he turned to radio and did the play-by-play of the Cincinnati Reds from 1942 through 1965. During rain delays, he filled the time by telling listeners of his days as a player and teammate of Babe Ruth. He also did commentary on the Reds' televised games during the 1972 season.
