Joseph Liebl is well-documented in the 1860, 1880, and 1900 census records. He and his parents were all born in Bavaria. As a 25-year old farmer in 1860, he lived in Farmington, Washington Co., Wisconsin with his first wife Maria and daughters Therese and Maria, Magdalina Berbinger, and Sophia Stall. They lived next door to his parents Andrew and Anna Liebl and his brother Michael. At age 46, Joseph was living on a farm in District 177, Lincoln Township, Plymouth Co., Iowa with his second wife Amelia and children C. Lena, Emil, Albert, Emma, and Leonora. They lived six doors from their son-in-law John Jacob Luken's parents (Barnhart and Elizabeth Luken) and seven houses away from son-in-law John and Mary Liebl Luken.

On July 20, 1846 the ship Francois 1, arrived in the port of New York, New York USA having departed from Le Havre, France.
