Leroy C. Holt
A Forgotten Citizen Civil War Warrior

I call Leroy a member of the many forgotten Citizen warriors of our county. At the current time very little is known about Leroy so he must have lived a very quiet life. I discovered him by accident when looking for someone else. I would welcome more information about him. Please contact me.

From the 1850 Federal Census he appears in Sumner Tennessee at the age of 12 giving him a birth year of about 1838. Assuming this is "our" Leroy, his father was Fredick Holt aged 45 in 1850, and mother was Dianna Holt aged 42 in 1850. There were also 5 siblings at the time from age 15 to age 4. A family tree on Ancestry.com gives his father as Fredrick (also spelled Frederrick) Holt with birth year of about 1805 in VA. His mother was Dianna Hughes with birth year of about 1808 in North Carolina. Also as many as 6 siblings.

I am unable to find much other family tree information on this family. In fact, I do not know how they are related to the Holt family as many of the Holt lines were in VA and TN.

The next time Leroy appears in the records is as a private enlisting in Company G, Tennessee 6th Infantry Regiment – of the Union army. This matches with what is on his grave stone.

The next time he appears in the records was in the 1910 Census for the Mountain Home VA residents in Washington County Tennessee. Here he is noted as aged 74, married twice, born in VA, father born in VA and mother born in MD. The last time he appears in records is his death document issued by the State of Tennessee showing he died on March 30th 1916 at the soldier's home. Date of birth is only noted as to year of 1836 in Tennessee but names of parents unknown. Also that he was resident of the home for over five years. The cause of death being Hepatitis. His former occupation was a Shoemaker.

At the current time (April 2013) I am unable to locate him on any of the US Census other than 1850 and the Solder's Home Census of 1910. We do not know the names of his wife's or if he had any children. Or. How he is related to the Holt family.

Update: May 1 2013: His wife's first name is Nancy. This is from record of application for pension. Unable yet to discover more of her name.
