Born Maria Georgievna zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Princess of Greece and Denmark, she was the daughter of George I, King of Greece and the Hellenes, and Olga Constantinovna Romanov, Grand Duchess of Russia. She succeeded to the title of Grand Duchess of Russia by her first marriage to George Michailovitch Romanov, Grand Duke of Russia. She later married Pericles Joannides (Perikles Loannidis) and was styled Her Imperial Highness, Grand Duchess Maria Georgievna of Russia, Mrs. Perikles Ioannidis.
