Leopold and his brother Roland established the oldest mercantile business in Aransas County in 1887 (the book Aransas indicates 1877?). Leopold was probably the senior partner in this firm known as "Bracht Bros.". Later their
brother Adolph started his own merctile store across from his brothers and Roland started his business, thus leaving Leopold the single owner of the original business as Bracht Mercantile Co.

The Bracht Mercantile store was located on Austin street at North street and their home faced Cornwald street at the corner with Live Oak street on the West. During the worst hurricane in history (1919) the Bracht home made refuage
for 250 people.
