John Baker

John S. Baker, 71, of 25 Grand Street, a retired employee of the City of Oneonta, died Thursday, April 12, at Fox Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born May 12, 1907 at Oneonta, a son of William and Sara (Strong) Baker. He married Romaine Rifenburgh on December 7, 1945 at Milford.

He had been employed as a laborer by the City of Oneonta, retiring in 1972. He had also formerly been employed by the Delaware & Hudson Railroad.

A lifetime resident of Oneonta, he was a member of the Oneonta Aerie of Eagles; the American Association of Retired Persons, and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife; a brother, Aaron Baker of 4 King Street; a sister, Mrs. Basil (Mabelle) Anderson, 10 Telford Street, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 16, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Raimund L. Tumbelston, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday at their convenience.
