Bernard graduated from high school in Antrim, N.H. in June 1915 and from the University of N.H. in 1921. After graduating from the University, he taught in high schools in Walpole, Warner, Contoocook and Milford, N.H.; and then worked several years for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He later worked in the Farm Security Administration in R.I. and N.H.
