Oldest child and only son born to farmer Willard Ray Baker and Minnie Louise Lawrence, in Augusta, Ontario.

About 1941 Ken volunteered for the Canadian Army, serving with the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards, R.C.I.C. (Royal Canadian Infantry Corps), in Italy.

In August 1944 Canadian forces began a ferocious assault on the Gothic Line, the most heavily fortified German line, stretching across Northern Italy.

After initial successes the Allied forces were seen to prevail, but the Germans recovered and the battle lasted through the Spring of 1945.

1,000 Canadians were lost and 3,000 wounded. Sadly Kenneth was KIA during the first wave of the attack, age 26.
