Obituary: Herbert A. Carpenter

Herbert A. Carpenter, 93, died in his home here in Lucerne Valley, after a short illness.

Herb (as he was known) was born on June 18, 1922 in Gardena, Ca. He was the youngest of four children. Herb graduated from Gardena High School in 1941. In 1945 he married his school classmate, Evelyn Delight who was also born and raised in Gardena, CA.

Herb worked at McDonald Douglas Aircraft for 32 years until his retirement. Herbert and Evelyn raised their two children, Greg and Susie in their home in Lakewood, Ca.

Herbert and Evelyn had their home built here in Lucerne Valley in 1971. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Lucerne Valley since 1983,

Herbert is survived by his wife of seventy years, Evelyn Delight-Carpenter, son Greg Carpenter, four grandchildren, Adam Smith, Cheri Smith (Cervantes), Kristin Smith Czech, Shannon Smith Tipton, all former graduates of Lucerne Valley High school, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.

He is also survived by two nephews and one niece plus other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his dearly loved daughter, Susan Carpenter Smith (librarian at Janice Horst Library for over 25 years), a brother, and two sisters.

A small family funeral will be held at the Lucerne Valley Memorial Park on Jan. 12, 2016.
