John R. Walsh was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for action in WW1. It was during the heavy fighting at Belleu Woods on October 23, 1918 that he earned his medal for bravery in battle. He and another soldier advanced on enemy machine guns killing many enemy and sending many others back to thier lines as prisoners. In doing so they put themselves in a position they were unable to escape from and they were forced to take cover for two days with no food. It was only after the eventual successful drive of U.S. Forces that John and his companion could escape. They had already been listed as missing in action and presumed dead.
After the war he returned to a hero's welcome back home in Woburn, Ma. He worked first as the Chief Probation Officer with the Woburn Court, and later as an Industry Agent with the State Department of Corrections. He died in 1976 at age 78 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woburn in Sec 'V', Lot 56.
