Jennie and her twin sister Maria (May) Wheaton Seymour Astle, were born at home on Wampanoag Trail in Barrington, RI. Their parents were Capt. William Francis Seymour and Mary Anne Wheaton. Their mother was an invalid due to Myelitis and died when they were 17, so they went to live with their aunt, Juliette Peck Seymour. Four years later Jennnie married a popular Providence bachelor, Nelson Hall Gibbs, although not before making him promise never to smoke again! She was a bit puritanical in her beliefs and did not allow dancing or playing cards on Sundays. She also insisted on going to church twice on Sundays.
They had 2 children: Louise May Gibbs and John Chase Gibbs.....17 years apart!
Jennie and her sister were two of the first stenographers in the city of Providence after graduating from Normal School (a teaching college).
Jennie was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Providence where she was head of the "cradle roll" (once a child was baptised, a mother & child luncheon was held anually in their honor until the child was 4 years old).
Jennie used to "read" cards, taught to her by a gypsy. None of us living today knows if she was good at it, but she taught her daughter, Louise, how to "read". Louise was extremely good at it, even though she didn't really believe the concept herself!
She was a member of the Daughter's of American Revolution through her ancestor, Capt. James Wheaton Brayton. Jennie was registered thru the Esek Hopkins Chapter.
She died of "old age" but was in a nursing home for 6 months with dementia before she died. She predecesed her sister by 3 years.
