The body of Taunton License Commissioner Joseph D. Bisio, a former city councilman was found Saturday at his 478 County Street home where he is believed to have died several hours earlier on Friday. He was 83 and the husband of the late Enis M. (Trucchi) Bisio. After 43 years as a proprietor of the County Street Market, Bisio in 1971 took on a new assignment, supervising operations at the stores owned by his brother-in-law William Trucchi. The County Street Trucchis, the third in the supermarket chain, was built shortly afterward behind the sight of Bisio's store. A Daily Gazette story on Bisio's closing of his store noted "it has been said that more decisions about the city were made in Joe's store than in the council chambers." Bisio later became involved in the Trucchis firm as co-owner before his retirement. He was also formerly associated with the R. M. Owen Company, a distributorship owned by the Trucchis but resigned this post to avoid a conflict of interest in a matter that came up before the license board, Bisio's service on the Taunton License Commission began in the late 1960s during the mayoral term of Benjamin A. Friedman and continued with subsequent six year appointments that spanned the mayoralties of Joseph E. Flood, Mayor Rudolph H. DeSilva, Theodore J. Aleixo and Richard Johnson. He served one term on the city council during the mid 1940s and had also served on the Board of Registrars of Voters for 17 years. Educated in Taunton schools he was a member of the Sons of Italy Naturalization Club and Taunton Elks Lodge 150. He attended St. Mary's Church. Son of the late Philip and Columbina (Campi) Bisio he was born in Bazaluzzo, Italy but resided in Taunton most of his life. After coming to the US in 1913, he worked at the McGee Furnace Company for eight years, and then at the Keefe Car Works in Sagamore for a year before opening his store. He and his wife were married in 1928, the same year he opened the market, and the late Mrs. Bisio assisted her husband for 30 years in running the store. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Matthew A. (Virginia M.) Lasarz of Taunton; a brother Francis "Chet" Bisio of Falmouth; a sister Laura Bisio of Taunton; a grandson Scott M. Lasarz of Taunton; two grand daughters, Suzanne E. and Sandra M. Lasarz, both of Taunton and several nephews and nieces.
