The son of Bruce and Rachel (Haptonstall) Cherrington, Samuel moved with the family to Knox County, Illinois, before 1850. He married Sarah Selicia Eldridge on 19 Nov 1854 in Knox County. Several children were born to this union: Gardner Allen, Francis Edward, Lorena Silicia, Grant, Agnes Addie, Leven, James Augustus, Callie Elizabeth, Rena May, and Samuel P Cherrington.
After his marriage, the family settled in Copley Township, Knox County, IL, for several years. They moved to Guthrie County, Iowa in the 1880's.
