Robert J. Allen, 85, of West Hartford, formerly of Manchester, died Sunday (October 14, 2012) at the UConn Medical Center in Farmington. Bob was born in Port Chester, NY on April 27, 1927, the son of Robert B. and Marion E. (Hendershott) Allen. He was raised in Manchester and spent most of his adult life in Manchester before moving to West Hartford ten years ago. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the US Navy from 1945 until 1954, and worked in the Hartford area most of his life. He had a funny and dry sense of humor, loved animals, and always had a dog in his home. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Allen of Manchester, his son, Robert Allen of Lake Mary, FL, two sisters, Vivian A. Christman of Avon, and Roberta A. Huey and her husband James Huey of Killeen, TX, three grandchildren, Jeremy Spiegel, Heather Spiegel, and Chandler Allen; four nieces and a nephew, Dianne Lutz, Nancy Lee McCullough, Sally Ann Watts, Joan Warnick, and Tom Warnick. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by a daughter, Debra Allen Spiegel.
A private graveside service with military honors will be held in the East Cemetery in Manchester. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of CT, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111. The Watkins Funeral Home in Manchester has care of arrangements.
