Son of Henry Alfred Collier and his wife Elizabeth Knight Elsworth. He emigrated as an apprentice at age 15 arriving in Australia 10 July 1873 on the Scythia. He married Elizabeth Mary Craige, daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Thomson Craige, 21 April 1882 in Adelaide, South Australia. She died 23 Aug 1884 at her residence, Ashley street, New Thebarton, Adelaide, aged 22 yrs. He then married Eliza Jane Hicks, daughter of Edward and Mary Ann (Pearce) Hicks, 9 July 1885 at California Gully, Victoria. They had nine children prior to Arthur's death.
