On November 2, 1813, Robert D. Patton was born in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Robert PATTON and Anna SMITH Patton. At a young age, he migrated with his family to Ohio.

Robert D. PATTON (1813 - 1895) became a blacksmith at an early age in Ohio and worked as a blacksmith over the course of many years in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

He also served as the village postmaster in Bloomfield, Morrow County, Ohio, in the 1850s while tending to his duties as a blacksmith.

In later years he also worked as a broom-maker; farmer; literature book salesman; map & chart salesman; hired man; county courthouse caretaker; helped run a boarding house; helped run a hotel; and was a noted gardener.

At the age of 22 years, Robert D. Patton married Miss Martha Ann HULL (1819-1856). Their marriage occurred on March 31, 1836, in Delaware County, Ohio. They were the parents of 13 children. Following his wife's death in 1856, Robert D. Patton was subsequently remarried three more times throughout his lifetime.

As he neared 50 years of age, Robert D. Patton proudly served as a Union soldier in the Civil War in Company "D" of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Regiment. With his skills as a blacksmith, he was appointed to the role of regimental blacksmith & mechanic in the quartermaster's department of his regiment. Robert D. Patton also served as a division ambulance teamster, hospital medic, and assisted with the ambulance corps during his Civil War service.

After the Civil War, Robert D. Patton became a patriotic member of the Grand Army of the Republic for Civil War veterans and also a proud member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Fraternal Lodge. He was a loyal member of the Republican party.

In his later years, Robert D. Patton attended many Grand Army of the Republic events and reunions for Civil War veterans. Newspaper articles state that he was very proud of the fact that he had served in the Civil War and that his 4 oldest sons had also served as Union soldiers.

Collectively, Robert D. Patton and his 4 sons had devoted almost 20 years of military service to their country during the Civil War.

In his lifetime, Robert D. Patton lived in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. In the final year of his life, he moved to Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas.

Robert D. Patton died on August 14, 1895, in Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas. He had reached the age of 81 years. At his funeral service, he was honored as an official member of the G.A.R. and the I.O.O.F. and as a Union veteran of the Civil War.

He is buried in the historic Oak Park Cemetery in Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas.
