Samuel was a true mystery man to his family. He was born in PA., and his family moved to OH. In 1871, when he was about 32 years old, he went west, and no one heard of him again until after his death.
When information was being gathered for the family genealogy book; "Many Generations" by Martha Blackwell Scott in 1969, Samuel's descendants knew only that in 1909 town officials from a town named Butler in an unknown state tracked down Samuel' s family in Ohio to notify them of Samuel' s death on 8/22/1909. They were told that he had a 40 acre homestead and never married. He was buried in "Paddock" Cemetery.
Mrs. Scott stated in her book that: "None of the current towns named Butler has a Paddock Cemetery, so the town where he died is probably not in existence.".
Thanks to modern technology, Find A Grave, and Ancestry, Samuel' s mystery life was easy to uncover.
In 1880 Samuel was living in Noble, Cass, IN., working as a laborer and living with a family as a servant. He was single. In 1900, Samuel was living alone in Butler, Otter Tail Co., MN., still single.
On 6/4/1906, Samuel was granted a land patent in Ottertail County, NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 20, in Twp. 137, North of Range 37, West of the 5th Principle Meridian --40 acres.
And then, in 1909, Samuel died on his 40 acres in complete isolation from his family, and was buried in Paddock Bethany Cemetery, in a town named Butler, in MN.
But Samuel remains a mystery man. Why did he leave his family in Ohio, with no further contact? Why did he never marry, apparently leading a solitary life?
Many questions left unanswered. But Samuel is not forgotten, and is no longer lost.
