OBITUARY - James Russell Miller
James Russell Miller was born May 28, 1929, in Piedmont, Okla. He was the son of Sanford and Janie Miller.
He graduated from El Reno High School and from Okmulgee Oklahoma Technical School as a diesel mechanic.
On Feb. 2, 1954, James was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Okarche, Okla., by Rev. Paul Hoyer.
On Aug. 8, 1954, James was united in Christian marriage with Vera Peters by Rev. Paul Hoyer. Their union was blessed with three sons.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.
James was employed by Halliburton Services on March 19, 1956, at Pampa, Texas. One week later he and Vera moved to Perryton, Texas. In 1964 they moved to Liberal, Kan.; in 1974 they moved to El Dorado and once more in 1986 James and Vera moved back to Liberal. James retired from Halliburton on Dec. 31, 1993, after 38 years of service.
James gave of himself in many ways serving the Lord. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberal, where he served as financial secretary, treasurer, trustee and the board of missions and stewardship. He was a member of the choir and also visited shut-ins.
In July 2009 James and Vera moved to El Reno, Okla., where he became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. James missed being able to serve his church in El Reno due to his illness.
James died Aug. 13, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in El Reno.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Janie Miller, and his three brothers, Gerald, Harold and Sanford Miller.
Survivors include his wife, Vera of the home; three sons, James Russell Miller, Jr. and his wife Shawn of Wichita, Robert W. Miller and his wife Janet of Owasso, Okla., and Marvin E. Miller of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Derald G. Miller of El Reno, Okla., and Gordon Dean Miller of Calumet, Okla.; two sisters, Margaret Sue Terneus of Yukon, Okla., and Gladys Marie Wilkerson of Tuttle, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandson.
Funeral service for James Miller will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in El Reno with burial in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Okarche, Okla., under the direction of Huber Benson Funeral Home of El Reno.
