Rebecca R. Alexander departed this life on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at her home in Shelby.

She was the younger of two daughters born to John and Lillian Russell.

She was born on July 8, 1936, in Lincolnton.

She was a graduate of West Charlotte High School and later received her college education from Johnson C. Smith University.

She taught in the North Carolina public school system for 31 years, most of which was in Cleveland County.

She was a faithful member of Durham United Methodist Church for 50 years where she served as the adult choir director, youth choir director, Sunday school teacher, and Outreached chairperson. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the adult choir.

She was a charter member of the Audacian Club of Shelby and the Cleveland/Rutherford Kidney Association where she was active until her health declined.

She loved traveling and working with children.

She also had a passion for working with flowers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Augustine Clawson.
